Upcoming Anime Inspired VR Games for 2019

Last year wasn’t too bad when it came to bringing anime experiences to virtual reality. However, 2019 is set to prove that virtual reality can provide anime fans with something even better. Here are all the upcoming anime-inspired games for the year i was able to find out about.

Nostos

Nostos is a post-apocalyptic open-world VR MMO which will allow players to interact with each other and with the environment in a number of ways. For example, you will be able to plant trees and build houses in a simulated ecosystem. Additionally, you’ll be able to gather resources and take down monsters along with other players as well.

Story: Explore a vast new world this is both tranquil and fraught with danger. Nostos is a land rich in a variety of landscapes. Explore historical sites, search for remnants of the war and slowly uncover a truth that has been lost to the sands of time. You will play as a hero of the settlers and set off on a journey with your companions, with whom you will forage for food, build and fight with side by side. In Nostos, a strange land, you will rely on each other, support each other, and fight together. Source

Opinion : This is my most anticipated anime VR game. I always wanted to play an MMO in VR, and I’m sure many others do. I’m not too much of a fan of post-apocalyptic settings nowadays since they’re kind of overdone. However, the post-apocalyptic setting in this game looks rather pretty, with lush vegetation and a working weather system.

  • Platform: PlayStation®VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift
  • Developer: NetEase Games
  • Publisher: NetEase Games
  • Release Date: To be announced

There are more than 230 companies working on virtual reality products.

Spice and Wolf VR

Spice and Wolf VR is a long VR anime based on the Spice and Wolf novel/manga/anime property. The team was also responsible for last year’s first long VR anime, Project Lux.

Story: I can’t say if this is a new season or something else entirely. I guess we’ll just have to wait.

Opinion : I’ve watched animations in VR such as Allumette . However, VR anime is a first for me, and I might check this out along with Project Lux.

  • Platform: PlayStation®VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, Oculus Quest
  • Developer: Spicy Tails
  • Publisher: Sekai Project
  • Release Date: To be announced
  • Official Website: http://spicy-tails.net/saw-vr/ (Saw VR, short for Spice and Wolf, not the Saw film franchise)

Last Labyrinth

Last Labyrinth is a VR Escape-The-Room game where you team up with a mysterious girl to try and escape a mansion with hidden dangers.

Story: What the…?! Your eyes begin to adjust to the darkness, and you find yourself in a room you’ve never seen before. You go to stand but are barely able to move. You look down to find that your arms and legs are strapped to a wheelchair. As the panic begins to set in, you catch a glimpse of a figure out of the corner of your eye. !? A young girl, standing in the darkness, stares at you with cold eyes… Source

Opinion : I suppose it’s something I might try out, but the trailer gives off a scary vibe. I admit I’m a gigantic pussy and generally avoid Horror VR games because they’re a tad too much for me to handle.

  • Platform: PlayStation®VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift
  • Developer: Amata K.K
  • Publisher: Amata K.K
  • Release Date: Spring 2019

TOKYO CHRONOS

TOKYO CHRONOS” is a VR visual novel mystery adventure. It is led by one of the producers of the Sword Art Online anime.

Oculus VR is a company that launched a Kickstarter project to release virtual reality goggles in the 2010s. Their goggles brought a lot of interest to virtual reality after many years of not a lot of interest by industry or consumers.

Story: Tokyo Chronos is about 8 childhood friends separated from the reality of this world, and trapped in an empty Shibuya, barren of any other souls. As time and space seemingly come to a halt, the eight begin to disappear, one by one. What has happened to this world? What is happening to the ones trapped inside this hollow void? Who is the culprit that set the mystery in motion in a space that stands still. Source

Opinion : I don’t play visual novels in general, but my interest is piqued if it’s in VR. Who knows? This might actually be fun.

  • Platform: PlayStation®VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift
  • Developer: MyDearest Inc.
  • Publisher: Limited Run Games, Sekai Project
  • Release Date: Early 2019 (Whatever that means)
  • Official Website: https://tokyochronos.com/en/

Focus on You

Focus on You is a new VR romance game featuring a real-life idol actress for the motion-capture acting. At launch, the game will have six chapters including the prologue.

Story: The star of the game is a Korean 3rd-grade high school photography major, Song Ah-Young, who apparently loves strawberries, K-pop and you. At the heart of the game is a romance story and is supposed to recall one’s “emotional first love” – so I’d imagine there will be petty tiffs and trivial misunderstandings that you and Ah-Young must content with each other. Source

Opinion : No anime list is complete without the obvious waifu simulator. I suppose the girl looks cute enough to warrant a try, although I’m not desperate enough to suddenly start playing dating games.

  • Platform: PlayStation®VR
  • Developer: Smilegate Entertainment
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco
  • Release Date: Spring 2019

Most People Haven't Tried It Yet. Virtual reality keeps growing in popularity. One study found that only one in three people in the United States have actually tried virtual reality. That means that there is still more room for acceptance among consumers in the country. On a positive note, nearly 90 percent of people were aware of virtual reality, which also means that many people have a basic understanding of the technology, even though they have not yet experienced it in person. The future is bright for the industry.
